Substituted methylene diphosphonates are effective inhibitors of the RNA polymerase of influenza A virus causing 50% inhibition of the polymerase activity when they are present in the concentration range 1085 µM. The inhibitory power of the methylene diphosphonates appears to be related to their ability to chelate with metal ions.
