Received January 21, 1987. Revised April 27, 1987. Accepted April 24, 1987.

The reaction of uridine 3'-phosphate with benzoylimidazole in 3' the absence and presence of a strong base was followed up by 31p and 1H nmr as well as paper electrophoresis. Possible reaction courses were proposed, the reaction rate constants were calculated and the reaction mechanism was discussed. It is possible to selectively acylate ribonucleotides with benzoylimidazole by appropriate choice of the base used.
