Received August 12, 1980. The 5'-terminal coding sequence for the 37 S precursor to rRNA of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is identified by reverse trsnscriptase extension and protection mapping with nuclease S1. The sequence of a 419 bp rDNA fragment containing the transcription initiation site and its adjacent region is determined.
