The 2003 Database Issue of Nucleic Acids Research is the tenth in a series dedicated to factual biological databases. Such databases are an essential resource for working biologists and this compilation provides descriptions of the most important of these databases and serves to introduce newly compiled databases that provide specialist information in the biological area. The current issue also marks a new era. Editorial responsibilities for the entire Database Issue have been taken over by Dr Andy Baxevanis. For several years, Andy has been producing a compendium of databases that includes all those databases described in Nucleic Acids Research, both in this issue and previous issues as well as selected other databases relevant to biologists. NAR Online contains hotlinks to all of the databases in the compilation as well as brief summaries of their content. Hotlinks are provided from that website directly to the homepage of each of the databases featured. At a recent meeting of the Editorial Board of Nucleic Acids Research it was decided that we would begin a new special issue devoted to software available via the internet that will perform interesting and useful computations on DNA, RNA and protein sequences and/or three-dimensional structures. This issue will be a companion to the Database Issue and will appear as the first issue in July, 2003. Prospective authors should consult the NAR website (http://nar.oupjournals.org/) for further details and submission instructions.
Authors wishing to submit articles for the 2004 Database Issue, who have not previously contributed to a database issue, should be certain to contact Dr A. Baxevanis (andy@nhgri.nih.gov) during the year, but ideally no later than July 1, 2003. All new articles will need to be received by August 15, 2003 at the latest, and should be prepared according to the instructions on the Nucleic Acids Research website (http://nar.oupjournals.org/). Authors who are invited to submit articles providing update information on databases that have previously been featured in Nucleic Acids Research should note that the deadline for submission of those articles is September 15, 2003. Individuals who wish to have their database listed in the compilation or update a previous submission to the compilation should contact Dr A. Baxevanis directly (andy@nhgri.nih.gov).
