Cover. Classifying magnesium binding sites in RNA is experimentally and computationally difficult. A 58 nt rRNA from Escherichia coli (1qa6 and 1hc8) has been an important model system for understanding RNA--magnesium interactions. The yellow cartoon image on the left shows crystallographically determined magnesium binding sites as magenta spheres. The cyan cartoon image on the right shows site- and diffusely-bound magnesium binding locations, detected computationally by the FEATURE system, as red spheres.
