Cover Figure

Cover: Outermost rings: chromosome coordinates of genes, barred bands are genes in two DNA strands coded for type of gene product; the locations of rRNA operons as arrows inside the outermost rings were all provided by Guy Plunket III, University of Wisconsin and reflect information from the paper on Escherichia coli [Riley et al. (2006) Nucleic Acids Research, 34, 1–9]. The inner ring shows proportions of types of gene products in E.coli from this paper and was provided by Margrethe Serres, Marine Biological Laboratory; the central image of a streak of colonies of E.coli was provided by Gavin Thomas, University of York, UK.
