Cover: This image shows a nucleosome-the main carrier of epigenetic information-in front of a typical CpG island sequence. CpG islands are exceptional regions in mammalian genomes, characterized simultaneously by high density of the "CG" pattern and by a promoter-like epigenetic signature.
The paper by Bock et al. (Nucleic Acids Res., 2008; 36: e55) shows that the sequential order of methylated and unmethylated CpGs inside CpG islands is highly variable among individuals, which has important implications for the planning of epigenome projects.
